The developers in Augusta wanted the largest and the best racing facility in the
United States. For a short period of time that dream was a reality. From the 3000 foot
long pit lane, to the grandstand area that stretched for over a quarter of a mile to the
garage area that was longer than a football field to an elevation change of 110 feet
and banking up to forty degrees. This place was Grand!

A - Turn one which is known as "cemetery turn". B - The downhill 1800 foot
section. C - The "Double S" section of the track. D - Front "straight". E -
Infield lakes which were to be used for hydroplane racing. F - The lowest
point on the circuit and named "Alligator Hollow" by Joe Weatherly. G - This
section of the track came within five feet of the infield lakes and is steeply
banked. H - Begins the uphill section of the track. I - Pit entrance. J - The
3000 foot long pit lane. K - Indicates direction of race traffic. L - The only
portion of the track that has been removed to accommodate Diamond Lakes
Regional Park. M - These are two state of the art ball fields. Thanks to Google Earth for this photograph.

Very interesting post, thanks :D Do you have also pictures of the track? I'm especially curious to the banking.

Herman.

Yes, I will be adding photographs of the road race circuit and the remainder of the eight track complex if their is interest. Between 1960 and 1970 this was the largest purpose built racing complex in the world.

The entire complex photographed in November 1963.

Modern day lap around the former circuit.

A section has been repaved and is the entrance lane into Diamond Lakes Regional Park which is being developed at the former track.

The video does not do justice to the degree of banking. I will be posting photographs as time permits.

This information provided during the United States Road Racing Championship (USRRC) event on March 1, 1964 provides additional information on the circuit.

This is a modern day photograph of the former pit lane. You would be standing at pit exit looking toward pit entrance which was over 3000 feet away. A very long pit lane by todays standards.

Image

Pit exit is straight ahead in this photograph of Cemetery Turn which was a high banked left hand turn from the drivers view. This turn was not named for bad accidents at the track. It was named for a family cemetery that was just to the left of where this photograph was taken.

More photographs will follow.

In these photographs the drivers would be coming towards the camera.

After leaving Cemetery Turn the drivers would begin an 1800 foot downhill grade with a drop of approximately 100 feet. In this photograph Cemetery Turn is in the distance and the downhill slope can already be noticed.
